A cardiac rhythm management system provides for the trending of a third heart sound (S3) index. The S3 index is a ratio, or an estimate of the ratio, of the number of S3 beats to the number of all heart beats, where the S3 beats are each a heart beat during which an occurrence of S3 is detected. An implantable sensor such as an accelerometer or a microphone senses an acoustic signal indicative heart sounds including S3. An S3 detector detects occurrences of S3 from the acoustic signal. A heart sound processing system trends the S3 index on a periodic basis to allow continuous monitoring of the S3 activity level, which is indicative of conditions related to heart failure.

Fibre Optic Distributed Sensing

Pub Date: 2013-11-07

Pub Number: US20130291642

This application describes methods and apparatus for fibre optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) where microstructured fibre (202), such as holey fibre or photonic crystal fibre is used as the sensing fibre (104). The microstructured fibre is configured so to provide at least one of enhanced sensitivity to a given incident acoustic signal; an enhanced non-linear optical power threshold and directional sensitivity. By configuring the microstructured fibre to be more compliant than an equivalent solid fibre and/or provide a large refractive index variation in response to applied strain, the response to a given acoustic stimulus may be larger than for the equivalent fibre, Providing a hollow core may allow higher optical powers and by providing a directionality to microstructured (304) allows the fibre to be used in a DAS system with a directional response.

Process for the Production of Xylenes

Pub Date: 2013-11-07

Pub Number: US20130296624

A hydrocarbon upgrading process is described in which a hydrocarbon feed is treated in at least one of a steam cracker, catalytic cracker, coker, hydrocracker, and reformer under suitable conditions to produce a first stream comprising aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. A second stream comprising C 6 -C 9 aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is recovered from the first stream and aliphatic hydrocarbons are removed from at least part of the second stream to produce an aliphatic hydrocarbon-depleted stream. The aliphatic hydrocarbon-depleted stream is then dealkylated and/or transalkylated and/or cracked (D/T/C) by contact with a catalyst under suitable reaction conditions to produce a third stream having an increased benzene and/or toluene content compared with said aliphatic hydrocarbon-depleted stream and a light paraffin by-product. Benzene and/or toluene from the third stream is then methylated with a methylating agent to produce a xylene-enriched stream.

In wireless communication system each MS is assigned a globally unique address. The method and system use one of these globally unique addresses to identify the MS. The efficient method of signaling this large size MS address (MS ID) is proposed. The n bit MS ID is divided into p parts wherein p is greater than 1. The MS is addressed or identified using x parts from a set of p parts of MS ID, wherein x=p. Further, methods to determine and signal the number of parts i.e. value of x and which x parts out of p parts to be used for addressing is also proposed. The decision to determine the number of parts i.e. value of x and which x parts out of p parts to be used for addressing the MS may be static, semi static or dynamic.
